What To Look For in a Home Just For The Two Of You

January 31, 2018 | By Scott Cooper

How To Buy The Perfect Spot When The Kids Are Gone

Go on, admit it!

When the kids have moved out (for real this time) and you’ve both got retirement on the horizon, it IS exciting to begin the search for a new home…one that will be for just the two of you. And it’s likely to be your final home purchase, so it’s important to find somewhere that will be welcoming and comforting for both of you.

We’ve put together a few ideas on what you should consider when settling on your new home…

WHICH FLOOR SIR?

Mobility might not be an issue for either of you now, but if this is to be your home for the third age, it’s important to plan for the possibility of wheelchair or assisted movements. Making your home accessible or buying a property that can be easily converted in the future will benefit not only you, but your friends and family who may need it in the years to come.

HIS AND HER SPACE

Even though you are probably moving to a smaller home, it’s important that both of you have rooms that are your own. Whether it’s a office or a greenhouse, don’t downsize to the point where you are constantly in each other’s way.

NEW LIFE, NEW HOBBIES

If your new home is significantly smaller, it doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice the things you want – it just means you need to prioritize them. If you love cooking, find a home with the kitchen of your dreams. If you love to entertain, look for a condo or a townhouse with a bar. Not having to to worry about bedrooms and playrooms means you can focus on the amenities you enjoy the most.

PROXIMITY TO YOUR FAMILY/FRIENDS

A little distance between you and your family isn’t always a bad thing, but don’t move too far away from your family and circle of friends if you can avoid it. Regardless of  your health, being close to the kids will become more necessary as you get older. And your refrigerator can’t get raided by your grand kids if you are 3 time zones away.
